Job Description

People Management

Building and maintaining a top-tier team is a constant process. The most important and challenging task is to keep morale high while also ensuring standards are met.

This person is directly responsible for:

  • Assisting with recruiting, hiring, and onboarding new staff on an as-needed basis. We do have a dedicated HR manager to assist with this.
  • Staying in constant communication with the HR manager, so that you are both on the same page (in both directions).
  • Ensuring the timely training of new staff
  • At times, training Certified Trainers
  • Ensuring the continued development of all staff
  • Managing and training mid-level managers
  • Conducting periodic staff check-ins
  • Supervising or executing disciplinary actions

Operations

As General Manager, you will be ultimately responsible for operations. The majority of this will be through the management of individual store Managers but also through frequent engagement with other team members.

You are expected to:

  • Ensure services, particularly busy peaks, are efficient and hospitable
  • To enable this outcome, you should prioritize being present in the restaurants during peak service
  • Ensure the team, from Dishwashers to Store Managers, follows protocols and standards
  • Maintain the highest standard of product quality
  • Maintain a culture of superior hospitality / customer service
  • Ensure an appropriate inventory of food and supplies is available at all times
  • Manage vendor relationships
  • Obtain and maintain official Food Manager’s Certification
  • Ensure that the restaurant maintains current permits as required by local regulation
  • Ensure sanitation protocols are being followed in accordance with Leaf & Grain policies and local regulations
  • Maintain the restaurant’s equipment in good, functional order

Administrative

These tasks are essential to the success of the restaurants.

  • Managing restaurant-level P&L
  • Communicating with corporate team on frequent basis
  • Ensuring supplier charges reflect invoiced quantities - including following up on returned product / credits
  • Maintaining diligent, organized records of receipts and invoices - including categorization
  • Aiding with store-level implementation as required (e.g., seasonal menu rollouts, new protocols)

Expectations

1) Be a Culture Carrier: As the most senior person in the store, you will set the tone from the top. Store Managers and the rest of the team will be observing and emulating your actions. You must embody the Leaf & Grain culture and uphold company standards every day.

2) Empower the Team: Your responsibilities as General Manager cannot be upheld if you are not able to delegate and rely on your team. You must coach your team constantly, pushing them to improve, learn new skills, and do their best work.

3) Be a Team Player: While your time is best spent managing, training, and engaging in higher-level planning, frequently, you will sometimes need to be involved in basic execution.

4) Strive for Self Sufficiency: Part of your role is to absorb operational issues the Store Manager does not have the capacity or training to troubleshoot on their own. Proactively seek out resolutions to these and other complications. Take ownership over your operation!

5) Communicate Effectively: As the General Manager, you will be responsible for handling the most complex pieces of the restaurant's operations. It is extremely important that you communicate clearly with your team, Leaf & Grain corporate, and third parties.
